The last of our school organized field trips was a day in Pompeii. This would be the renowned city that was buried under the ash of Mt. Vesuvius in 79 A.D. But before getting to the dead city, we had a long bus ride from Rome, past Naples, to Pompeii. Naples and Pompeii are in Campania, the region south of Lazio which contains Rome.
I would tell you how long the bus ride was, but I think I may have fallen asleep on the way to and the way from Pompeii. We had to meet for the trip at 7 a.m. (so I got up before 6 a.m.) and we walked around the city most of the day. The one thing I can tell you about Pompeii is it is a lot larger than I thought before going. When the city was destroyed, it was the home to at least 20,000 people.
Pompeii was a very interesting place to visit, but there was one thing about it that I did not like. Just like many places back home, there is a charge to enter the ruins of the city and once inside you cannot leave and re-enter. So if you want food or water while in Pompeii, you get to pay prices that are easily double that of any bar or cafe in the neighboring town. Tourist traps are an international plague.
