Another hot train ride, but at least it was lovely scenery.

And late Sunday night we finally rested:

After getting some sleep in our cramped hotel room in Florence, I felt a bit better. Despite them putting us in a room with one bed, we wound up having seperate beds. It turns out the "king size" bed was actually two singles pushed together. To sleep on that as a king must have been rather miserable for someone because the two singles were of different construction. The one had springs below the mattress and the other was just wood slats (like Ikea furniture). We were really annoyed with this place and checked out before the owner ever showed up. We just left the keys and took off.

Florence was very nice, but we needed reservations for just about everything and had none. So our time there consisted of wandering around and doing a bit of shopping. Matt bought a very nice chess set for himself, while I continued purchasing things for other people. We seem to be spending differently. He has bought several very nice things for himself (including a great masque in Venice), while I've only purchased one thing for myself during this trip. I like to give things to people, and I already have the one thing you cannot buy in any of the stores here - the experience as a whole.

We had a short time in Pisa, but it was a nice trip. The four-hour ride back to Rome wasn't much fun, but this is what you get with regional trains.
